Laozi and Zhuangzi: Learning to Live More Lightly

Recently, I’ve been reading Laozi and Zhuangzi, and one idea keeps coming back to me:

Maybe life becomes easier when we stop trying to control everything.

Laozi speaks of wu wei — often translated as “non-action.” But it does not mean doing nothing.

It means not forcing things unnecessarily.

Instead of constantly pushing, controlling, and trying to make life fit our plans, we learn to move with changing circumstances.

Water is the classic image. It is soft, but it keeps moving. When it meets a rock, it does not fight the rock. It flows around it.

That kind of flexibility may be a form of strength.

We often suffer because we become too attached to ideas like:

“I must live this way.”

“This is the correct path.”

“I should become this kind of person.”

But life changes. We change too.

Zhuangzi takes this even further.

He questions the categories we use to judge the world: success and failure, good and bad, happiness and unhappiness.

From one point of view, something may look like a failure. From another, it may become an important turning point.

So perhaps we do not always need to decide immediately whether something is “good” or “bad.”

Sometimes it is enough to observe.

Even our idea of “self” may be less fixed than we think.

The person we are at work, with family, alone, or while traveling can all be different. There may not be one permanent version of “me” that must be protected forever.

That means it is okay to change direction.

To change your mind.

To stop something that no longer fits.

And perhaps one of the most attractive parts of Zhuangzi is his lightness.

We do not need to fight every opinion or prove that our way is correct.

Sometimes we can simply think:

“Interesting. That is one way of seeing it.”

And move on.

In the end, Laozi and Zhuangzi seem to point toward a simpler way of living:

Force less.
Judge less.
Cling less.
Adapt more.
Pay attention to the flow.

Life does not have to be a project that we completely solve.

Maybe it is something we keep adjusting to, moment by moment.
